Pidgin Literacy Finished
On Friday, we finished our very first Pidgin Literacy course!
I offered the class to anyone who had taken our Do literacy class and wanted to learn to read (or read better) and write in the trade language - Melanesian Pidgin. I had 12 students and we did class 3 times a week for four months.
After our final test on Friday, Eki spoke for a bit about how important literacy is for reading and understanding their Pidgin Bibles. He encouraged them to practice so they would keep improving in reading and comprehension.

I was able to then reinforce that: If they stayed in their homes, their legs would forget how to hike these mountains and they would lose those muscles. In the same way, they need to practice and practice their reading so they can clearly understand God's Word.
I handed out graduation certificates.

I honored the three students who had the best attendance records and gave them lollipops along with their certificates just as a fun treat. After giving certificates, they each shook hands with me and gave me gifts of peanuts, oranges, avocados, and vanilla beans.

In the days leading up to the final class, the students planned out a meal - who would give rice and who would give other garden food. I gave them one of my chickens and also had some extra flour that we won't use before we leave. So after class, we all ate together and measured out big bowls of food for each student to take back to their kids.

Annie was SO excited to be a part of it all (and couldn't believe that the fried flour balls were free!).
Eki insisted that I put this photo on the internet so everyone could see :)

In other news, our neighbor Inok has a new pet that has been exciting for the kids.

Green tree python...!

Being done with literacy will free up several hours a week for Zach and me. Now to prepare our house and family for furlough!
